James smiled. "You will be able to, I promise you that. We'll get you both out and you'll be safe." He clutched her tightly to his chest, stroking her hair gently.  "You and Thomas will be safe from him, I promise." And he couldn't do anything less than promise. He had to. He had to get her and Thomas out, and keep them safe, and make sure he would never be able to hurt them again.

James smiled and led Amanda out of the house and down the path. They were on the coast here, and he led her to the cliff's edge. Waves crashed against the beach far below and the moon hung heavy and full overhead. "I like to come out here, sometimes. It's peaceful. Nice." He smiled at Amanda. "It's a good place to think. I was here a lot after the accident, once Becky was out of the hospital."

He remembered just how hard Ella and Kevan had fought not only to have Becky treated properly by the nurses and doctors (Because she was much too injured just for a vet and needed an actual hospital) but also for James to be allowed to stay in the room with her.

He had been able to be patched up at the vet's office with stitches. Still, he was flagged in the system as a former fighting dog and was known to be dangerous. Standard procedure for hospitals to scan all pet chips.

So he had spent his days curled up next to Becky in the room, left behind when they had to do tests and things. They had both hated it - Becky had been so scared of everything that was going on - she had been unable to hear due to the bandages and unable to see due to the attack. All she had to go on was scent and that wasn't much help - the hospital had always smelled of disinfectant, sickness, and death.

"I should have realized something was wrong, when I could never get ahold of you. I should have asked Ella and Kevan to try harder to get in contact. I'm sorry, I..." He trailed off with a sigh.

Amanda was a bit wary about leaving the house and Thomas, worried that he might get scared if he up and she wasn’t around, so she will have to trust he wouldn’t and will have a deep and heavy sleep as he could get sometimes, and mutely let James guide her to wherever he wanted to go. What surprised her about the place he led her to wasn’t how peaceful and beautiful it was, but the fact that for a few moments she stood there and thought how easy it will be to just jump and end it all.

But she couldn’t do that, it was the coward way out and she wasn’t a person that will do something like that. “I’m really…sorry that I couldn’t be here when that happened, you know that I would have if I had been able to do so, I would have fought to get here if I had known.”

And wasn’t that what she had been doing all this time, she bowed to her husband in certain things and yet fought him so much in others, he still hadn’t completely broken her and she knew, oh she knew that he hated and despised that. She took a deep breath and shook her head.

“You don’t need to apologize, it wasn’t your fault and I was more than aware to what I was agreeing to.” She had walked into this with her eyes wide open, it was Thomas what had made the situation even more complicated. “What’s done is done and I need to accept my life as it is.”

James smiled, "It's okay." And it was. He was starting to see that maybe, just maybe, they had both done things to contribute to all of this, and it wasn't just one of them that was at fault. He didn't blame Amanda for putting herself and Thomas first, for doing what she had to do to survive.

He curled his arm around her shoulders and tugged her gently closer. He hesitated for a moment longer before pressing a kiss to her temple.

“Hmm, is it really okay?” There were days in which she still wondered if she could have done more, in tried to find a way to keep them both, but no matter how much she had thought about it, well it wasn’t something that wouldn’t have been allowed for her and then things had gone from bad to worse for both of them and there was nothing more to do than to resign themselves to it.

She tensed just a bit at the gentle touch, she wasn’t used to getting those anymore and it took her a bit to relax, to be sure she wasn’t about to be hurt at some point or another. The kiss surprised her and she tilted her head a bit to look at him a bit curiously, but didn’t said anything.

James nodded. "Yeah, it's really okay." He smiled down at her. She hadn't seemed to react badly to the kiss on her temple so he leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. He was feeling bold, but not that bold. Plus Amanda was still hurt, and would be hurt for a long time to come, if she ever fully healed from the past three years.

“I think it will take me a long time to actually accept things are really okay.” And it really shouldn’t be surprised that she was going to feel like that for a bit, when he moved closer for a few seconds she thought he was going to kiss her and she wasn’t sure if she felt disappointed or not when he didn’t. “So what are we going to do now, James?”

James sighed, "Get you two to safety, for the first thing. Everything else is secondary." He rubbed his hand over Amanda's shoulder. "Before the attack, Ella had thoughts to get Becky and I out... There's a few countries that have banned owning pets that aren't true animals. She wanted us to go there and make our way that way. But then that fell apart..."

“…I am not sure if I’m ever going to feel safe again, I really hate the person he has turned me into.” He hadn’t been lying when he had mentioned she had changed, because she had, she wasn’t the same person she was before and she doubted she was ever going to be able to be again, she had the marks of it to never forget and know she couldn’t go back to how she was before. “…you could still go with that plan you know, it would be difficult, but you could still do it.”

"I'm not going without you. Not anymore. If Becky and I were free, he wouldn't be able to come after us anymore." He rubbed his fingertips over her shoulder in small circles.

"We should probably get inside... Make sure Becky and Thomas are going to sleep... I can make us hot chocolates if you want..."

[immaculates]

She laughed just a bit. “That sounds actually good, maybe it can actually happen, who knows.” And if it didn’t happened for her, at the very least Thomas could get away from the hell they had called life so far, because she was sure that if she returned to her husband now, they were both going to end killing each other.

“Yes, I guess, though Thomas sleeps like a log most of the times, but he can get scared if he comes out and doesn’t find me.” She smiles just a bit. “Hmm that sounds good, I don’t think I can…” She stopped when she felt a sudden cold drop against her cheek, followed by another. “Oh, I guess Ella was right about the storm.”

James smiled, "She usually is." He wrapped his arm around her and guided her back into the house. It was all quiet, the kids still asleep. He led the way back into the kitchen. "If Thomas wakes up, I'll be able to hear him."

He started putting together the things to make hot chocolate but as he stood at the stove, he was careful not to put weight on his bad leg. Usually he was fine, but combined with the walk, then Amanda's arrival and all that had followed, it was starting to ache.

“You have known her longer than me, so I will trust your word on it.” She was a bit thankful the children seemed to still be sleeping undisturbed; she wanted Thomas to rest as much as possible since she wasn’t sure just what their next move was going to be. “Thank you.”

Amanda watched James for a bit and sighed just a bit. “James, why don’t you sit down and I will make it, alright?” She smiled a bit then. “You have done a lot for me already.”

James just shook his head, "I'm fine." He stirred the milk and looked over at Amanda. "I put cinnamon in when I make hot chocolate, is that okay with you?" He held the whisk awkwardly in his right hand, the combination of his not-quite-human fingers and the fact that he was missing two made it awkward to hold the whisk properly.

Amanda would have insisted again but decided to let it rest, not wanting to push it and annoy him. “Yes, its fine, I used to have it like that when I was younger.” It had been the way her grandmother used to make it every time she was over and it had kind of stopped once she passed. “Are you sure you don’t want help?”

"Yes, I'm fine, let me." He tucked his ears back at her briefly, but there was no bite, no anger in his voice at all. He wanted to take care of her and that was that. He didn't need any help making hot chocolate.

Finally he was done and settled at the table across from Amanda, passing her one of the mugs. "Here. See how it tastes."

“Alright then,” And that was that she supposed, it was better to let him do as he wished and just moved to take a seat while she waited, still keeping her attention on seeing if she could hear her son if he woke up, but everything was quiet as expected. She would actually be rather thankful if he was asleep most of the night.

She smiled at him when he handed her the mug. “Thank you.” She blew on it a bit and then took a small sip. “Hmm, it’s great, thank you.”

James smiled, watching her taste the hot chocolate. She didn't know it, but he had slipped a sleeping pill into the drink - nothing too strong, but enough that she wouldn't be waking up until morning - by which time she and Thomas and Becky and himself would be headed out of the country. "You're welcome."

He took a sip of his own hot chocolate and watched her closely, ready for her to start wavering in her seat.

Amanda just feebly smiled back and focused on her drink, she still needed to think through a lot of things since she couldn’t stay here forever. By the time she noticed something was off it was too late and she just started to feel the effects of whatever…he had slipped something in her drink…she placed her cup on the table and looked at him with a mild betrayed look and just a bit panicked, her husband had done this to her and it had ended in quite an awful experience for her.

“What…what did you do…how could you…” And whatever else she wanted to say was lost when pill worked its way on her system and she just passed out.

James was on his feet as soon as Amanda started to wobble in her seat and moved around to cradle her gently in his arms, "I'm sorry, Amanda. I'm sorry, I had to. We have to keep you and Thomas safe," he said in a whisper, pulling her against his chest securely.

He stood carefully, taking Amanda to his bed. He settled her in under the covers but only removed her shoes. Then he stood and headed back out to the living room, where Ella and Kevan were. "She's out. We need to move, quickly."

Ella frowned just a bit. “I still think it was rather unnecessary to drug her, you know, what if she feels betrayed once she wakes up?” And considering all the hell the woman had gone through it was more than likely. “Anyway, we have your things and Becky’s already fixed, we took the chance when you went out for the walk to do it.”

“It was a risk I guess, but it was necessary.” Kevan shrugged a bit. “She seemed to be prepared to be away for a bit, she brought things for her and Thomas…she also had a gun, by the way, I think whatever she was planning to do was going to happen after making sure her son was safe. So really, I think everything is set, we are leaving as well just in case that man comes after us and…we just need to get you four out of here.”

"We'll come to that when we get to it." He fully expected her to be pissed at him. "But we have to get them out. Thomas and Becky are asleep. I'll carry Amanda." He sighed and rubbed his forehead. "Let's get the bags out first."

He'd never been attached to places. But he'd been here for three years. Becky loved it here. He loved it here. But they would be safer elsewhere. So would Amanda and Thomas. He hated that Ella and Kevan were being forced out of their home as well, but it wasn't safe for them either.

Still, they had everything they would need. Somebody would be by later to pick up the house, shut it down and lock it up for the forseeable future.

James settled on the couch with a sigh, rubbing his fingers over the couch cushion.

“From what it looks like, she might give you the cold shoulder; it doesn’t look as if she will hurt you.” Ella shrugged a bit. “She seems to care for you, so that might make it worse, I don’t know.” This was getting worse than she expected, but they could deal with this as long at the four of them were fine.

Kevan just patted Ella on the shoulder. “We have the bags near the door, we might need to return the car she rented though since and I don’t think that will be too much of a hassle, but if we’re going to do this, we better do it now, the further you are the better and more difficult it will be for him to find you, since I think the think she wants the most is to avoid a confrontation between you and him.” He turned then. “Come on then, let’s get this over and done with.”

James nodded. He stood back up and helped pack the SUV. Then he slipped into Becky's bedroom and packed her a travel bag - her favorite toys, some clothing that Ella hadn't packed, her textured toys that held her attention now that bright colors couldn't.

Then he settled on the edge of the bed and took a few moments to just look at her - she was so tiny, so fragile, her little chest rising and falling as she slept. He knew, under her shirt, she was a mess of scars from her throat to her belly. She was so beautiful... He reached up and touched her belly though her shirt, then slipped his hand under, feeling the soft fur of her belly marred by a network of scars.

She whined and started to stir. "Hey, Beck... We're gonna go for a trip, okay? We're gonna go somewhere fun. You and me and your momma and Thomas and Ella and Kevan. All of us." James kept his voice low and quiet. "So we gotta get dressed so we can go, alright?"

Becky whined again but nodded. She started to get up, clinging to James until he put her upright.

While James had gone to wake up Becky, since it was really better if they did it, Ella and Kevan finished with whatever needed to be done. They locked what needed to be locked, took as much as they could before they had to send someone to take the rest and leaving a call on the rental agency so they could come up pick up the car Amanda had rented coming with a very good and believable story for the sudden change.

Feeling there was nothing else to do, Ella went to retrieve Thomas while her husband went to get Amanda and move to the car, and she still felt bad for what they had done to Amanda but was necessary. She was also quite thankful that as mildly confused as Thomas looked, she didn’t make much of a fuss and accepted to be moved. After having securing him in her arms she went to Becky’s room and lightly knocked. “James, we are going to the car, Kev already took Amanda there and I have Thomas so once you are ready come outside.”

Ella felt just a bit sad about leaving her house and everything but it was for a reason, their safety and it was a small price to pay. Amanda had already been carefully settled on the backseat and when she moved to try to settle Thomas, he finally noticed his mother and pretty much crawled towards her and settled against her, and really she couldn’t help but smile when even despite her sleep Amanda reacted and wrapped her arms around him. “At least they are going to be safe.”

James nodded. He had just managed to get Becky into clean pants and stood, slinging the bag over his shoulder and her onto his hip. She whined sleepily. "How about a juice box, Beck? We'll get one for Thomas, too."

He headed for the kitchen, retrieved two juice boxes from the ridge he had helped Ella shop for two years ago and gave one to Becky. He settled in the back seat next to Amanda, Becky in his lap. He stared out the window for a few moments, closed his eyes, and sighed, "Let's go."
