Bucky moved into Steve's hold, only Steve's voice keeping his heart rate from jumping up, keeping his lungs from seizing up. He jerked at the shortened version of his nickname. It sounded nice coming from Steve's mouth, even though he had always hated it from anybody else.
"I think I want to lay down," he said after a while, but made no attempt to pull away from Steve. He kept petting Penny, making himself focus on her and nothing else. Not the world outside, not what he was going to do with his future, not what happened in his past.
He was exhausted and dizzy. His lungs could handle getting enough oxygen in, but not if he was going to be on the knife-edge of a panic attack for hours at a time. He could feel the clutch of it in his throat, the anxiety welling up from somewhere he hadn't known existed a year ago.
